April Yasamee
I work with paper as a sculptural material, which I combine with mixed media, including wire, wood and metals. I create small scale & large scale paper sculpture. My recent concerns include the effects of gravity on suspended paper sculptures. I use a range of papers to create 3D forms, including found commercial wall papers, photographic prints, drawing and watercolour papers and Japanese papers. The process of manipulation and transformation of paper is as important to me as the finished artwork, including ceding control of the materials to their intrinsic qualities to guide my expectations of what is possible. My paper sculptures address tension, balance & imbalance, fragility, instability, impermanence, and shadow play.
I create sculptural installations in spaces that people can walk into. Recent installations in Phoenix Artspace, Brighton & Towner Gallery, Eastbourne encourage interaction from visitors as improvised photographic models within the sculptures.
Before moving to St Leonards on Sea my working studios have been in London, Bristol, Italy & Australia
