In Possessing the Past, Alexander Johnson shows paintings developed from two stereoscope cards, both original photos taken over a century ago. One is the aftermath of the San Francisco earthquake in 1906 and the second a late Victorian image of a cottonfield in the Deep South USA around 1898. These originals are manipulated, colourised and enlarged to make new images and re-think the way we interpret photographic documentation.
